When the gannets flew out of the clouds of #Boreray, wheeling and hovering, hanging in the Atlantic winds, the fading sun gave me one chance, one last flash of golden light. Primordial seems like the right word for what I saw. #Sunsets at Boreray are rare. Not the actual sun going down, but pictures taken at sunset. It’s three hours out by day boat from Harris; by sunset the visitors are usually gone back over the pitching seas to safe harbor. This uninhabited island is part of St. Kilda, those storied islands 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides, made legendary by the poignant tale of their abandonment. Seamus Morrison brought me out for sunset, the sun broke through, the gannets swarmed out to us in their thousands, a crewman grabbed my belt to keep me from being tossed overboard.
