Almost no western journalists had visited rebel-held Syria for over a year when she went in. The threat of kidnapping was high, so she wore a full abaya, hijab and niqab (facial veil). “Every time I’ve been to Syria, I’ve always thought, ‘it can’t get any worse,’” she said. “And going back this trip, it’s clear that the situation does continue to get worse.
