In the early 1900's, Western explorers and missionaries visited the temples at Angkor Wat, a magnificent site familiar to us but totally unknown to the West at the time. The former capital of the Khmer Empire was built, and abruptly sacked, in the 12th century and lay mostly unused for centuries.
