This is not how I have been encouraged to use Instagram. I have been encouraged to be less political. But what is the point of having an audience if you cannot say what you want to say. So few women have access to media. The stats are all there if you want to look them up. We don’t have women on tv, we don’t publish women, we don’t fund their movies, the list goes on. Same goes for people of color. So today when I read that MSNBC has taken away editorial control from @mharrisperry I was devastated. Unmotivated. A confirmation that mass media is as bad as we think it is. MHP is one of the few women/poc that gets to be thoughtful, political, and on TV. She is one of the few who gets to talk about things other than fashion/family/food. She is one of the few who gets to say politics matter and I understand them, and can learn, and can challenge, and can create space for new realities, new ideas, and better possibilities. Every time I’ve been on TV, I have been deeply disturbed. I witnessed the women/poc around me consistently dismissed, dumbed down, and sidelined. I have always loved politics, and have always sought out intelligent political voices, finding female/poc ones either in the margins, or few and far between. It makes me sad that “political” in mass media has become so white and male, that I hear, especially women, frequently proclaim of their own free will, “I’m just not that political!” Everyone is political whether they want to be or not, silence is political, money is political, decisions about where we send our children to school, where we work, who we hire and fire, the products we buy, the way we dress, the transportation we use – all of those are political choices. We need people like Melissa Harris Perry because she gave us something to aspire to. Because of her I wanted to get a PhD before ever going on TV again. Because of her I realized if you’re in the media and you’re not creating something, teaching something, or making space for someone, you’re just making noise. More people need to feel like there is a place for them in building a better society, that’s why #IStandWithMHP
