Did you know that herring communicate by releasing air from their anus? The scientific term is called Fast Repetitive Tick Sounds or FRT’S. These farts occur in stereotyped bursts of 7-65 pulses that create a low frequency sound. Scientists hypothesize that this release of bubbles is used as “contact calls” between the herring. I have always seen herring release the biggest streams of bubbles when they are being hunted by orcas and I would love to know what they are saying. #followme on @paulnicklen as I will be posting a video that shows this behavior in action.
