If you’ve crossed the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn at some point within the last 40 years, you’ve seen the giant red letters: “Watchtower.” The illuminated sign crests along the skyline proclaiming the world headquarters of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the religious group that is better known for its door-to-door evangelism than its substantial real estate holdings in Brooklyn. But now that the 733,000-square-foot headquarters complex and 2 other nearby properties are up for for sale, the sign glows with new meaning — a beacon for development. The sale is expected to bring in as much as $1 billion, and the buyer will take ownership of nearly 1 million square feet of development rights. @edwardcarusophoto photographed the Jehovah’s Witnesses headquarters while on #nytassignment.
