I'm often asked what is the most dangerous moment in my career of photographing natures creatures. I find it pleasant 99 % of the time and danger has always been relative to my own stupidity. While in Yellowstone I got between a cow Elk and her spring calf and this became a truly terrifying few minutes ... I was alone in a public place with a towering snorting demon from hell that was intent on stamping me to pieces. Trapped outside the door of the parks main administration building were moments before I had made this image of a very cute calf ... "Stashed " there by the cow for safety while she grazed My wimpering could not be heard and she was determined to get me. I was hiding behind a stone column with a snow shovel fending her off using the column to block her. She called for reinforcements and 2 other giant Elk cows joined her and I could no longer keep her at bay. I was literally crying with fear. At this moment the door directly behind me opened and I slipped inside to be immediately berated by my savior " you idiot they are wild animals there are red danger cones and warning signs EVERYWHERE that say do not approach Elk " I'm still licking my wounds of stupidity ( the facts have been slightly altered to make the story better but it is all true in my imagination ) Photo by @michaelnicknichols // I spent 14 months photographing in Yellowstone for the coming May 2016 issues of National Geographic Magazine. Will post images @michaelnicknichols and @natgeo #yellowstone #yellowstonenationalpark #nationalgeographic #nationalpark
