L'Arc de saint Gilles is based on the legend of Saint Gilles, a 7th-century hermit living among wild animals in the south of France, who saved a doe from King Flavius's arrow. According to the legend, the arrow pierced the saint's hand; in Huang Yong Ping's work, the doe, divided in two by the bow, reveals a hollow body lined with gold, giving the object an almost mystical quality. #huangyongping
