Time for an insightful #TrilobiteTuesday! One of the most studied characteristics of trilobites is their amazing eyes. Indeed, trilobites were the first creatures in the fossil record to show evidence of complex eye structures. Yet for all the attention trilobite eyes receive (including the pivotal role the eyes of the trilobite Phacops played in establishing the theory of Punctuated Equilibria), some trilobite spices were actually blind! Take for example this engaging grouping of large (7 cm) Concocrype sulzuri from the Middle Cambrian of the Czech Republic. This species apparently inhabited a deep-sea domain devoid of light. In a world where eyesight was not of paramount importance, eyes never evolved.
