Photo by @tyronefoto (Tyrone Turner) The remains of the old sugar mill speak volumes about the quilombo community of #Frechal in the Brazilian state of #Maranho. The descendants of slaves that used to work the fields and the mill now own the land. In fact, I was shooting this picture from the old plantation house, which the community now uses for classroom space, guest accommodations and meeting areas. I had visited this incredible community years prior with @susanfoto when we lived in #brazil as fellows for the Institute of Current World Affairs #icwa #quilombo @natgeocreative @thephotosociety
