Our weekly content creator, Garrett Gee of @thebucketlistfamily, says that he wasn’t the best student at Brigham Young University. Instead he spent a majority of his time building an app called Scan with a couple of his friends. The app let you scan bar codes on products in stores, so that you could see if they were being offered somewhere else for less cost. All of a sudden, people were downloading the app every second, totaling about 90,000 downloads every day—this, all while Gee and his friends were in their dorm rooms. “We were students but we were so focused on building this app rather than going to class. We continued to grow it until about 100 million people had downloaded the app,” says Gee. That’s when they heard from Snapchat. Within 24 hours after meeting the Snapchat team, an offer was on the table and soon negotiations ensued. The app was sold for $54 million. Gee says: “I waited to tell my wife and family. Then when my wife was in labor, I pulled out my phone and showed her our bank account.” Mic drop. “We were living a frugal life and all of a sudden we had won the lottery. What would you have done with the money? You think, ‘I want to splurge on a car or house’ but for us, it just didn’t feel right. We started to joke about putting the money aside and instead selling all of our things and using that money to travel the world. And that’s just what we did. We sold everything we owned in a yard sale and we came up with a plan for a global bucket list trip where we could do humanitarian work and live frugally. We wanted to be wise with the money, so we put it aside and planned to travel the world and experience what brought people happiness and joy in different cultures. In the end, while we could still buy the fancy car, we hope these adventures will teach our family to find happiness through experiences more than material things."
