Toward the end of his tenure with the George Nelson Office, #IrvingHarper began making paper sculptures in his off hours to relieve stress. The works were mostly built out of paperboard, but also balsa wood, beads, straws, toothpicks, pinecones, telephone wire, twigs, dolls’ limbs and glass eyeballs, Mylar sheets, and Styrofoam lumps. It was a hobby that continued from 1963 to 2000, during which time Harper created roughly 500 sculptures, evidence of his remarkable skill and inexhaustible creativity.
