Phone photo by @michaelchristopherbrown. This was my window view during a United Nations flight over Lake Kivu, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes and lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The lake is in the Albertine Rift and sits upon a rift valley that is slowly being pulled apart, causing volcanic activity in the area, and making it particularly deep: its maximum depth of 480 m (1,575 ft) is ranked eighteenth in the world. The large rift lakes of Africa are the ancient home of great biodiversity; 10 percent of the world's fish species are found there. Lakes Victoria, Tanganyika, and Malawi hold a quarter of the planet's freshwater supply.
