@RobertClarkphoto This is the strangest animal I have ever meet, so many unique adaptive #evolutionary paths The thorny dragon is an Australian lizard, grows up 20cm and it can live for up to 20 years. They are coloured in camouflaging shades of desert browns and tans and pale colours during warm weather and to darker colours during cold weather. They are covered entirely with conical spines that are mostly uncalcified. They also sport a spiny "false head" on the back of its neck, when the lizard is presented with a potential predators the devil dipping its real head and shows the "false head" which is made of soft tissue. There is not sufficient evidence that can prove the organism's evolution based on morphology. The thorny dragon's scales are ridged, enabling the animal to collect water from any part of its body. That water is then pushed to the mouth through capillary action. An intimidating array of spikes covers the entire upper side of the body of the thorny dragon. These thorny scales also help to defend it from predators. Camouflage and deception may also be used to evade predation. The thorny dragon is only distantly related to the similar North American horned lizards. This similarity is usually thought of as an example of convergent evolution meaning the branch of biology that deals with the form of living organisms, and with relationships between their structures. #Darwin #evolutionarybiology @natgeo
