Rice – #Food for the World 1/3
More than 780 million tons of #rice worldwide will have to be produced every year to ensure food security by 2020 – an increase of about 30 percent above today’s levels.
Rice is one of the world’s most important cereals: around three billion people eat the white grain on a daily basis. Especially for the fast growing population in #Asia, rice is a key dietary element.
Small rice farmers play a key role in the production process of this important staple #crop. But they mostly cultivate their small fields with traditional methods that are often very labor-intensive and only bring low profits.
#Bayer #CropScience believes that the key to improve this is an approach of sustainable innovation. For this, Bayer CropScience has developed several programs. These initiatives are mainly designed to make effective use of modern technologies such as innovative seed and crop protection products. This is the only way to overcome 21st-century challenges such as drought, rural depopulation, fertilizer shortages or the need to observe sustainability principles in #agriculture.
