Photo @coryrichards Nyeko Ronald is 26 yrs old...abducted when he was eight, he spent 18 years in the bush. Two days ago, after the first six months of reintegration work he was dropped off at home in his village just south of the border of Sudan. This will be his first Christmas with his family since he was taken nearly two decades ago. For him, this is likely the most memorable Christmas he'll ever have. The story of child soldiers is loathsome and unfortunately, nearly global. It isn't only African rebel groups and militias that forcibly take, train, and traumatize children in the name of a cause. The very nature of the psychology of a child's brain makes them nearly perfect targets for this. When the brain is fundamentally dehumanized, people are capable of the most inhumane of acts. Early developmental traumas such as those employed as retention processes by rebel groups leave deep emotional wounds that, if left unaddressed, become infectious. Ex child soldiers and former combatants often escape one rebel group only to join another. Recruitment is high amongst those who do not undergo reintegration as the persistent traumas lend themselves well to difficulty adjusting, leading to isolation and eventually recidivism. More young men and women need to be spending their holidays, whatever they may be, at home...with family and friends.
