Standing alongside an active volcanic crater, with globs of molten lava being tossed into the air all around you, is an exhilarating blend of excitement and terror. When I asked my guide how to avoid being hit by one of these volcanic bombs - some the size of a small car - he said simply, “get out of the way.” Seemed like sensible advice.
