@stevewinterphoto @natgeo This was shot for my @natgeo Leopard story in the Dec 2015 issue of National Geographic Magazine. Sometimes the closeness of people and leopards has terrible results. Because many of these communities do not have toilets, human leopard conflict sometimes occurs. The government would like the communities to leave. So the govt. will not allow toilets to be built in many communities they feel are squatters. As they do not have toilets some people use the park and forest as their bathrooms. Though large predators do not see humans as food - we are not part of their search image, as we walk on two legs and our eyes face forward. When humans squat down to cut crops or grasses for their livestock or for a "call of nature” a leopard may attack a human as they look small. Most of the people I met that were attacked - as soon as they stood up the leopard ran away. Unfortunately this woman - (name withheld) lost her 5 year old daughter on a early morning when her mother in law took her into the forest to use the bathroom. She turned for a few seconds and a leopard took the little girl. Here in this photo she is her with her sister and her new daughter, that was born on the same day as the one that died. There has not been an attack on humans in the last 3 years. Which is amazing considering Sanjay Gandhi National Park and these amazing adaptable leopards is surrounded by 21 million people. National Geographic launched the Big Cats Initiative to raise awareness and implement change to the dire situation facing big cats.
