Standing next to a river of sapphire blue meltwater flowing across the dark cryoconite-spotted surface of the #Greenland Ice Sheet. This meltwater will eventually flow into the ice sheet, drilling downwards through hundreds of thousands of years of ancient ice, until it meets the bedrock below. From there it helps lubricate the ice sheet, thereby accelerating the flow of the outlet glaciers found all around the periphery of Greenland. Greenland is losing close to 300 billion tons of ice per year through the processes of melt and glaciers calving icebergs into the ocean.
