The Beast with Two Backs: a 2000 year old tale of art, media and gender misconception. The Sleeping Hermaphroditus is a Roman sculpture of a hermaphrodite. Velazquez copied the sculpture (minus penis or at least penis obscura) for his painting The Rokeby Venus. The painting's supine dorsal perspective became an industry standard for representing ultimate female beauty. In 1914, prompted by the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst, suffragette Mary Richardson slashed Velazquez's painting with a meat cleaver to protest the objectification of women or more bluntly "the way men visitors gaped at it all day long". You just couldn't make this up...
