Photograph by @Thomas Peschak Located in Heiltsuk territory on the central coast of B.C., Namu has an archaeological record of over 10,000 years of continuous occupation. The site was developed as a salmon cannery and fish processing plant, which operated for about 80 years before it closed. Since the early 1990's the buildings and wharfs have deteriorated and contaminants continue leaching into one of the coast's prime sockeye salmon rivers. The seabed beneath the former canteen is littered with old glass bottles encrusted by clumps of barnacles.
