Bearing Witness ~ The Refugee Crisis

On 20 September, 2014, a father and son carry the most important items they could grab before fleeing their home as IS began to overrun their city of Kobani, Syria -- musical instruments. Over that weekend last September began the largest mass exodus of humans in this region since the fall of the Ottoman Empire...more 150,000 fleeing for safety, crossing into neighboring Turkey over a 72 hour period -- Unpublished, photographed while on the @outofedenwalk story that ran in the March 2015 issue of National Geographic magazine.

This photograph is part of my multi-week series, #BearingWitnesstheRefugeeCrisis, delving deep into my archive of more than 20 years documenting forced migration based upon war, conflict, poverty and oppression around the world.
The events we are witnessing throughout Europe and beyond have haunted humanity for centuries. Today we are seeing the largest mass migration since World War II, the desperate act of tens of thousands fleeing war and oppression.
