While in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia recently documenting the fire crisis, we met Indonesian military forces that had been deployed to the area to assist. One group of thirty soldiers arrived at the Tuanan Orangutan Research Site to help fight the fires burning in the peat forest there. But they brought no equipment, so there was little that they could do to help. Orangutan research assistants were already using all available equipment to make wells in the forest and fight the fires.
