I had a helicopter on stand-by for many days to catch weather this clear in Liaoning province, where even on a sunny day there were only indistinct shadows due to extraordinary levels of air pollution. Just released data indicates that China has actually been burning 17% more coal that previously disclosed. Since this photo was taken in 2006, China’s coal consumption has approximately doubled.
