Smoke rises from a controlled burn in a distant sugarcane field in Ribeirao Preto region of Sao Paulo state, Brazil on Oct. 5, 2011. The burning of sugarcane fields is the primary source of harmful emissions in the process of creating sugar ethanol. Although action is being taken to reduce this practice, evidence suggests that sugarcane field burning is not fully accounted for.
