Her family’s home is right next to the field where the migrants were being held. “There was a mother who carried her son like I carry my son and she had a little girl walking next to her, like my daughter. I started crying and, when she saw me, she started crying, too," said Anka.

Residents of Rigonce, a town of 176, had to figure out how to handle the estimated 70,000 refugees who have passed through the village. The migrants—mostly refugees fleeing war and violence in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq—crossed over a bridge from Croatia into Rigonce, Slovenia on their way to Germany and Austria.
