The Smithsonian’s Badge of Office was presented to Secretary David J. Skorton at his installation ceremony yesterday. It’s made of 18-carat gold and features the Owl of Athena, representing wisdom, along with an olive branch as a symbol of peace and goodwill. The owl has yellow sapphires for eyes, and stands next to the words from James Smithson’s will that sparked the Smithsonian: “For the Increase and Diffusion of Knowledge Among Men.”
