The Tajiks are Ishmaelites who live in houses with a distinctive architecture. To be invited into the house of a stranger is to enter into a sort of intimacy. There, I lived moments of intensity which were truly gifts. While my presence was accepted, I made sure that my camera appeared merely to be a discreet extension of myself. In traditional Tajiki homes, sources of light are rare and come through wells of light created in the roof. In this case, it was not enough to reveal the face of this young woman. In these cases, I do not use a flash, but rather seek another way of reflecting the light into area of darkness I wish to brighten. I often carry a little portable reflector. Otherwise, I resort to my imagination and a bit of ingenuity: a large plate or a white sheet can also do the trick. In this case, I followed the young woman’s movements attentively. I turned her kitchen counter, covered with flour and white pastry, into a conduit for the light which would reflect upon her face.
