What exactly is the Internet of Things (#IoT) and how does it affect our daily lives? #Oracle team members at the Apps Lab wanted to take a closer look by building an internet-connected Nerf gun to showcase at #JavaOne this year. This was done by adding the ESP8266 to connect the Nerf gun to the inter-webs and then rigging the internal mechanism to fire without pulling the trigger. Next, Amazon Echo was integrated into the Nerf gun in order to send commands to launch any number of darts from anywhere in the world! The IoT Nerf gun can even talk to other internet enabled services like #Twitter. The Nerf gun is set up so that every time a dart is launched, it tweets about it. Team member Mark Vilrokx believes that the IoT Nerf gun is just one example of connecting a “thing” to the internet. He even explains the ideas behind the IoT Nerf gun by thinking outside the box and posing “what if” questions. He states: "Want to get notified when an important email comes in from your boss by getting a foam dart in the back? No problem! Want to replace your kids’ alarms with something more effective? Done! Want to get a notification from your Nerf gun every time it launches a dart? Easy!” Last week, the team decided to test out the Nerf gun at a workshop put on by Oracle Education Foundation at the Design Tech High School. Students expressed their excitement and had many questions! Want to learn more and see it for yourself? Attend JavaOne to test out the IoT Nerf gun in person at the MakerZone in #Java Hub. #lifeatOracle
