Photo by: @bethjwald/@thephotosociety This photo is the first in a series I will post this week, in honor of "Indigenous People's Day" (better known in the US as Colombus Day!), and to celebrate the diversity, culture and strength of the indigenous peoples of the Americas who have survived 523 years of injustice, racism and brutality brought by colonization. In other countries of the Americas, the day is known as Dia de la Raza, Dia de la Descolonización, Dia de la Resistencia Indígena. The struggle continues to this day from the north of Arctic Circle to the Amazon. A #Huaorani woman holds her child in the Amazon rainforest of eastern Ecuador, the #Oriente, but the idyllic scene is near the #Maxus road, built by foreign oil companies in the 1990s deep into Huaorani territory and bisecting Yasuni National Park. The Huaorani were first devastated by oil exploitation in the 1960's, when Texaco began drilling in their territory, followed by many other multi-national oil companies who have destroyed forests and polluted waters across the Oriente. The Huaorani and many indigenous people across the Amazon are on increasingly on the frontline, in a struggle for cultural survival in the face of intensive pressure to extract natural resources - oil, coal and metals - from ancestral lands. Oil development and roads are continuing to expand within Yasuni Park and Huaorani territtory; environmental and human rights groups like #accionecologica @Yasunidos #CEDHU #Saramanta Warmikuni and many others have joined the Huaorani in their struggle for their forest and their way of life.
