This is the Crown-of-thorns Sea Star, a carnivorous predator that preys on coral polyps. Although famous in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia for having population explosions and killing reefs, this photo was taken in Panama at Coiba Island, where Crown-of-thorns appear to be in reasonable numbers and in balance in the ecosystem.
