photo by @Joel Sartore | This large pigeon species (photographed at the @houstonzoo) was unknown to scientists until 1854 when it was finally described by Charles Lucien Bonaparte (the nephew of the famous Napoleon Bonaparte). Today, this pigeon is in decline due to their limited range and habitat loss. Although a large and beautiful bird, little is known of its habits in nature and it is rare in captive collections.
