On 20 April 1964, the BBC planned to launch it's brand new channel BBC2 at 7.20pm that evening. However, 35 minutes before there was a massive fire at Battersea Power Station which caused a power failure across most of London, including at BBC Television Centre. As a result, BBC2 launched a day later than planned. In reference to the power cut, the transmission opened with a shot of a lit candle which was then sarcastically blown out by presenter Denis Tuohy.
