@stevewinterphoto @natgeo This was shot for my upcoming @natgeo Leopard story in the Dec 2015 issue of National Geographic Magazine. Here is a baboon looking into the camera - curious as to what this is. I set this camera trap to get an image of a female leopard and her cubs as this is on a trail that she walks. Setting a camera trap takes a long time - first tracking where the cat walks and figuring out if this is a normal trail she walks or just a trail she takes infrequently. I need to set the camera so I know at least every 2 weeks she will walk this trail on her normal rounds of her home range. In this instance it is close to the den where the cubs are staying so she will quite often walk here and I will get an image of her and hopefully her cubs! If you save the top predator in any ecosystem you save all life that lives under them - especially their homes the forests or grasslands. 50% of our oxygen comes from forest - the other 50% from the oceans. 75% of fresh water comes from forests. So if we save their homes - we help save ourselves. Last night I saw Racing Extinction - a vital film for our time. There is hope - each of us can make a difference. Find out how @ #racingextinction. See Racing Extinction and join the conversation. National Geographic launched the Big Cats Initiative to raise awareness and implement change to the dire situation facing big cats.
