Of the 25 nations worldwide with the highest rates of child marriage, the majority are countries affected by conflict or natural disasters. To guard girls from this violence, families often resort to child marriage as a form of protection and to increase economic stability, not realizing the negative impact this will have on her life and that of her community. This image was made #onassignment for National Geographic in 2010. Today, the magazine's Proof blog tells the story of how this long-term project morphed into our nonprofit @tooyoungtowed . Our mission is to protect girls’ rights and end child marriage. We do this through the power of visual storytelling and supporting these girls through programs on the ground where our photographs were made.
