photo by @randyolson | words by @neilshea13 — Randy Olson, soaked in blood. One of my favorite images, because it shows what he’ll do, how far he’ll go. We’d crashed a party, a celebration of the Daasanach tribe, and he was in close, photographing the ritual slaughter of a bull that would feed many families. Warriors had speared the beast and its blood pooled on the ground, mixing there with mud and dung. All around men and women were singing and dancing, hoisting spears, shaking stone-filled gourds and rattles made from old bottle caps, calling out to the bull, to god, and the ancestors. A few of the dancers lost themselves in wild, rapturous trances, and one of these young men stomped past the bull’s leaking body, splashing Randy with blood and offal. I heard him spit and curse, looked over, saw him wiping gore from his face. He’d been so busy shooting, so intent on the work—looking for angles, he’d say, for geometry—that he hadn’t seen it coming. We walked to the edge of the ceremony where Randy washed his face and tried rinsing the stuff off his hat. We were coughing at the smell, the hot iron tang, and saying the Swahili phrase for Shit Happens when a woman approached. She pointed at Randy’s shirt. Can I have it? she asked. Then another came, and a man, and more followed, each asking for the shirt. That blood is good luck, they said. It’s a blessing! At first Randy thought it less blessing, more biohazard. But soon he was smiling again, and people streamed past to congratulate him. Luck-splatter, happy accident, and in the end he wore it home. I just checked. He still has the shirt. This is an out-take from our recent Instagram series on Kenya’s Lake Turkana. You can see the whole project archived at #NGwatershedstories, and find our feature article on Lake Turkana in the August 2015 issue of @natgeo magazine. Thanks for following along!
