photo by @Joel Sartore | Pūkeko is the New Zealand name for the Purple Swamphen that is found in the South Pacific, including Australia. The subspecies found in New Zealand is Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus, having landed there around a thousand years ago from Australia. Pūkeko can commonly be seen along marshy roadsides and low-lying open country, and their range has increased with agricultural development. The pūkeko is well loved by many New Zealanders, winning Forest and Bird’s Bird of the Year competition in 2011.
