photo by @Joel Sartore | The Australian brushtail possum was introduced into New Zealand in 1837 to start up a fur trade. The fur trade never took off but possum numbers definitely did, peaking at 80 million. To put that into perspective, New Zealand currently has a population of about 4 million people and 40 million sheep! Intensive pest control efforts have seen possum numbers reduced to about 40 million now. The biggest problem with the possum is that they don’t have any natural predators in New Zealand and the climate their suits them very well. They can breed year round and there is plenty of food for them. They are destroying New Zealand’s forests and eat about 9000 tons of foliage every night of the week. They also predate on bird nests, eating eggs and chicks, including those of New Zealand’s iconic kiwi bird. This possum, named "Pestilence," is used to educate visitors @kiwibirdlifepark in Queenstown, New Zealand. www.kiwibird.co.nz. You won't believe what happened a moment after this picture was taken.
