Photo by @stephenwilkes: The Aicklen family waited out Hurricane Katrina in their 1937 house along the North Beach Boulevard Historic District. They were secure in the knowledge that parts of the town lie 30 feet above sea level, the highest elevation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. “But when we finally decided to open the door and go out, it was as if they set the house on the Moon,” says Kathleen Aiklen. “There was a blanket of sand three feet deep covering our white picket fence.” The family is shown here in front of their home, and reflected in the Airstream trailer that would soon carry their belongings to their new home in California, where they would join the estimated two million people displaced by Katrina, including two thirds of the 8,000 residents of Bay St. Louis.
