#TsengTakeover, 4/7: This photo shows complete or partial forearm bones (the radius) of 15 individuals of the extinct dog Borophagus discovered at a single fossil site in Oklahoma, showing off the impressive number of specimens from a single type of bone that can be found from each of hundreds of fossil sites represented in our collections. Top predators are typically low in population numbers to begin with, and are even rarer in the fossil record. However, fossil dogs, perhaps more abundant than their competitors, with some dog species that probably formed social groups, represent some of the best preserved predator fossils of their time. The vertebrate paleontology collection of the American Museum of Natural History is unparalleled in its diversity and quantity of fossil dogs, occupying more than 50 cabinets with total number of specimens estimated at between 5,000-10,000. This immense and diverse collection makes it a critical source of information for paleontologists and biologists. Fossils and natural history collections are our time capsules of Nature’s different eras, and scientists are learning a great deal from them about how past environments interacted with ecological communities. Supporting research on biodiversity both past and present is one of the key roles of natural history museums in modern science.
