It is one thing to be a fly on the wall and witness this rarely seen feeding event. It is another to have the orcas take a few seconds to check us out: foreign visitors in their ocean. This great sequence was shot by my good friend, Göran Ehlmé. Göran and I have worked together on six @ナショナルジオグラフィック assignments and believe me when I tell you that it takes a great team to pull off one of these projects.
You can hear how important acoustical communication is to these orcas. You can even hear a humpback whale in the background. Now, imagine adding ship traffic noise, boat noise, oil seismic exploration noise, and oil drilling to this habitat. Just miles from where we filmed this feeding behavior, there is ongoing oil drilling, ship traffic and oil exploration taking place.
