photo by @randyolson | words by @neilshea13 — At dusk the east wind eases and a new boat is launched onto Lake Turkana. She creaks under the weight of her crew, men slender as reeds, and she creaks as the waves slap her hull. She is full of little complaints, not yet accustomed to the work. Oars thud along the gunwales and already water slops over the bottom boards, though she doesn’t yet stink of fish and her ribs aren’t slick with blood and scales. Not far from shore a fisherman feeds a net over the side. It is torn and ragged and has been been mended many times. Like a moth-eaten coat it does not appear confident. Like the universe it is made mostly of emptiness. But among the fishermen there is no doubt. They are El Molo, smallest of Kenya’s tribes, and they’ve been here, fishing, since time began. Hope and hunger have shadowed them for generations, while nets and boats are details lately arrived from down-country. The big perch are long gone from the shallows but plenty of smaller fish remain, and they’ll do. In the last light the last net sinks beneath silver water. Without a word the pilot turns for home. He looks to the cook fires glowing onshore and knows beyond seeing which one is his own. Today Randy Olson and I begin a new Instagram series from Lake Turkana. These pieces are part of our ongoing #NGwatershedseries, and they’re linked to our feature article in the August issue of @natgeo magazine. We love print, but we’re excited, too, by the way Instagram helps us expand beyond paper boundaries, raise more voices and share more stories. Join us @randyolson and @neilshea13 as we follow water down the desert. #2014 #africa #kenya #laketurkana #elmolo #jadesea #fishing #water #documentary #reportage #everydayafrica #everydayeverywhere #instajournalism @thephotosociety @petergwin
