The Indian luna moth belongs to the family Saturniidae, a group of moths with a spectacular sense of smell. Males use their large, feathery antennae to comb the air for the aroma of females. By some accounts, they will follow a trail of scent for a mile or more. Adult saturniid moths don't eat—they don't even have the mouthparts needed to do so. They live just a few days and devote all of that time to finding each other and mating.
Meet more amazing creatures in the new exhibition, Life at the Limits, now open!
