It's so nice to be behind the lens again! Today was an absolutely marvelous day out on Monterey Bay. For hours on end, we had whales breaching and tail-lobbing in all directions. What was most amazing, is how the show never stopped. I've seen whales breach, but I've never seen so many different whales active all at once. These humpback whales are truly the only baleen whale that will actively breach and perform surface acrobatics. We believe breaching could be used for communication, play, or to scratch off pesky barnacles. Absolutely the most dramatic and mesmerizing encounter one can experience in the animal world! Every time a whale breaches, the sounds echoes through the air and rattles every bone in your body.
