In 1997, the town of Akmola replaced Almaty as capital of Kazakhstan, and subsequently was renamed Astana (meaning "The Capital" in Kazakh) in 1998. A planned city, Astana has tripled in population and is now home to futuristic buildings and skyscrapers. From a rooftop of the Right Bank, one is afforded a spectacular view of the Left Bank city center with the Parliament Buildings (red and blue), Samruk Kayzna (green), Baiterek, and other high-rises.
