Photograph by @remibenali. The Desert Libraries, Mauritania. That morning we left Chinguetti to drive 100 km north (60 miles) following the wadi or dry river bed toward the ancient city of Ouadane. Founded in the 12th century AD, Ouadane was a lighthouse along the caravan roads and the city made its fortune from the salt trade. Its glory vanished. Still there are a few inhabitants left in Ouadane, trying to hold onto their raft in the middle of a sea of sand. Mint Homode, curator of the Ouadane Library, is holding with gentle hope an ancient manuscript about the life of the Prophet Mohammed. Its author, Bader Alden Alayni Alhanafi died in 1451 AD.
