Photo by @randyolson | words by @neilshea13 — She walks alone every morning to the river carrying an old plastic jerry can. One of the first tasks handed down to girls, one of the last given up by widows. Day after day, days measured in liters, days spilled onto floors and through dirty fingers. Disappearing into cracks. God! You can imagine having children simply to escape this chore and sometimes I’ve heard mothers say so. A joke made without laughter. After a while I think: I’d do it. There is no reward but survival and no skill in the fetching except on certain magical days when you’re able to convince another girl to fetch for you, or a smaller brother not yet old enough to know that this is women’s work. Today wasn’t that day. She lifts her skirt to keep it dry and turns homeward. Tells herself not to mind. Says, It’s all right. Half of everyone is doing it, after all. You see all the footprints. It’s a good spot and clear of crocodiles. A mindless job but not so hard. If the shore mud is slick, she’ll slip and sink under the weight of her water. If it’s dry, she’ll save a few minutes and arrive sooner back in the village, before the sun gets angry. But really what’s the difference? The wet season has ended and the river is shrinking. She takes notice like a commuter watching traffic crawl from a city. There is no meaning. It’s no one’s fault. Every morning she must go a little farther. For the last six years, Randy Olson and I have been documenting culture, change, and conflict in the watershed that connects southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. In the August issue of @natgeo magazine we’ll publish the latest in our series, #NGwatershedstories.
