The nest will still be home to the fledglings until their parents have taught them how to fish. The adults wingspan is almost six feet, they usually mate for life and their lifespan is 7-10 years. By the end of August, the young and their parents will begin their migration south to their wintering grounds in the Caribbean, Central America and South America. The Rappahannock River is a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, sometimes referred to as the "osprey garden" because of the nearly 2,000 nesting pairs of ospreys in the Chesapeake Bay Area. It is the largest concentration of nesting ospreys in the world. The Ospreys like the bald eagle were nearly extinct on the Atlantic coast in the early 1970s due to the widespread use of the pesticide DDT, sprayed on farm crops and used to control mosquitos. DDT was banned and people have built thousands of artificial nest platforms along the waterways. The ospreys are doing very well but their survival depends on the abundance of fish (their diet is 99% fish) and the intensity of human development along the shoreline.
