Photograph by @paulnicklen for @ナショナルジオグラフィック in the Yucatan, Mexico. A young Mayan man ascends a rope and stick ladder from one of their favorite swimming holes. The Mayans bring tourists here daily to cool off after guiding them on hikes through the rainforest. Unbeknownst to the tourists, just a few feet below the surface lie the remains of over a hundred Mayan people who were buried here over 500 years ago. You can see that many of the skulls in this large burial site were ritually modified and some show signs of sacrificial rites.
