With a degree from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Saint Cloud, Christian Caujolle has studied under and collaborated with Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes and Pierre Bourdieu. Previously a critic and editor-at-chief for photography for the newspaper Libération alongside Serge July, he founded the Agence Vu photographer agency in 1986 and then the Agence Vu gallery in 1998. Christian Caujolle keeps watch over contemporary photography in France. He has been heavily involved in the success of many photographers such as Michael Ackermann, Antoine d’Agata, Lars Turnbörk, JH Engström, Christopher Strömlholm and Anders Petersen, to name but a few. He was the artistic director of Rencontres d’Arles 1997, and has published many works on photographers such as William Klein, Anders Petersen, Isabel Muñoz, Christer Strömholm, Peter Beard and Juan Manuel Castro Prieto. He runs the Photo Phnom Penh festival, which he started in 2008 in Cambodia. Since the ImagesSingulières festival in Sète was founded, he has regularly helped with scheduling and promotion as well as helping to provide a blank canvas for the artists.
